Health and Recreation

Several health and fitness clubs are located in Liberal. These private facilities offer racquetball, martial arts, dance, and weight lifting. The city has more than 90 acres in parkland with playing fields, activity buildings, and playgrounds. There are also public and private golf courses and swimming pools and a public shooting range.

Because of its size and location, Liberal is becoming a regional health center. Our medical community includes a number of specialists as well as general practitioners.

Southwest Medical Center

The newly expanded Southwest Medical Center provides top quality health care to area residents. Services and facilities include an intensive care unit, birthing center, surgical suites, emergency department, rehabilitation and therapy services, radiology services, and laboratory services.

Southwest Guidance Center

The Southwest Guidance Center is an out-patient community health center. It is staffed by clinical psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and clinical nurse specialists.

Spectator Sports

Liberal’s boys of summer, the Bee Jays semi-pro baseball team, play at Fairgrounds Park.

The Great Plains Polo Association plays every Sunday afternoon year-round. Field polo is played during the summer at the polo grounds. Arena polo is played during the winter at the Fair Grounds Arena. Great Plains also sponsors three major polo events each year.

The Saints of Seward County Community College have a full range of men’s and women’s teams, including basketball, tennis, and baseball.

Liberal High School also has a wide-range of sporting events to watch and a large following of fans. The Redskins boast a two-time defending state-champion football team, a 7 time defending state-champion men's track team, and a 4 time defending state-champion women's track team.

Adult Participation Sports

The Liberal parks and recreation department organizes many sporting and athletic activities. Some of these are aerobics, swimming, tennis, basketball, volleyball, softball, and flag football. Southwest Kansas is also a favorite for pheasant, upland game bird, and deer hunters.
