With the passage of Federal No Child Left Behind legislation, the state of Kansas implemented the Kansas Assessments. All three of Cottonwood’s grade levels take both the Reading and Math assessment. Fourth grade also takes the Science assessment, fifth grade takes the writing assessment, and sixth grade takes the Social Studies assessment. The scores on these assessments determine whether the school makes “Adequate Yearly Progress” (AYP). It is vital that our students do their best on these assessments.
How Parents Can Help Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep during the assessment (at least 8 hours.) Make sure your child eats a good breakfast (high in protein and fiber, low in sugar.) Make any appointments for a different day, so there are no interruptions to testing. Encourage them to do their best. Parents are the best motivators for their children. Review the standards with your children. Have your child explain to you what they are supposed to know.
