AVID is a comprehensive college-readiness system that helps prepare students in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility. AVID students have the determination to work hard to fulfill their desire to go to college. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Students receive instruction in WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading) strategies for academic support and success. AVID’s definition of rigor is, “using inquiry-based collaborative strategies to challenge and engage students in content resulting in increasingly complex levels of understanding.”

The formula is simple - raise expectations of students, and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap. USD480 offers AVID to 7th – 12th graders as an elective course that meets regularly during the school day.

Requirements for Students in the AVID Elective Class (Grades 7-12):

  • Apply, be selected, and enroll in the AVID Elective Class
  • Enroll in advanced academic classes each semester/year
  • Maintain satisfactory attendance and behavior requirements
  • Maintain an AVID binder and take Cornell Notes in academic classes
  • Actively participate in weekly tutorials
  • Commit to studying extra hours every night to complete all homework assignments
  • Be involved in school activities and community service

AVID Elementary (Grades 4-6):

AVID strategies are imbedded in the 4th-6th grade curriculum. Students receive the following strategies in their multi-subject non-elective classrooms: Organizational Tool accountability and responsibility, agenda/planner to foster a “plan-ahead” mentality, note-taking strategies (STAR), inquiry and collaborative learning for comprehension.  The utilization of these skills will help students’ preparation for middle school and create a smoother transition for middle school and for high school.
